The founder and permanent artistic director and chief director of the theater since 1978 is Yuri Arkadyevich Harmelin. Born in 1954. In 1977, he graduated from the Pyatigorsk State Institute of Foreign Languages, specializing in "Teacher of English and German".
In 1985, he graduated from the directing department of the B.V. Shchukin Theatre School (university) at the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre, Moscow.
Since 1995, he has been the founder and director of his own educational institution, the City Theatre Lyceum. Since 2001, he has been the founder and rector of the International Academy of Culture, Theatre Arts, and Management, and since 2005, he has been the dean of the theatre department at the Slavic University of Moldova.
In the theatre, he works as a director, sometimes as a production designer and the author of many adaptations of classical works, as well as a translator of some plays from English.
During his 40 years at the theater, he staged over 250 productions by Russian, Soviet, and foreign authors. In addition to our theater, he staged productions at the Russian Drama Theater named after A.P. Chekhov (The Queen Mother, Chasing Two Hares by V. Staritsky, The Wizard of the Emerald City by A. Volkov), and at the Republican Theater "Luceafarul" he staged the play "Tango" by S. Mrozek in the Moldovan language.
He successfully combines his theatrical work as a stage director with teaching acting and directing at the City Theatre Lyceum and the theatre department of the Slavic University of Moldova, as well as administrative work. He has taught several excellent courses as a master and artistic director at various universities across the country. Almost all of Yuri Harmelin's graduates are successfully working in theatres in Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, and abroad.
Awards at the National Theatre Arts Competition "Gala Premiilor UNITEM":
• In 2006, the award for best direction and best performance "Troikasemerkatuz", a mystical drama based on the play by N. Kolyada.
• In 2013, the award for best direction and best performance "Equus", a psychological drama based on the play by P. Sheffer and for the best children's performance "Dunno and His Friends", a musical fairy tale
by N. Nosov. • In 2014, the Eugenia Todirashku medal for the performance "Levushka", a lyrical comedy based on the work of A. Krym.
• In 2015, the "Excellence" award and a special prize from the UNITEM Jury for the performance "White Crow", a rock opera by Y. Rybchinsky.
• In 2016, special prizes from the UNITEM Jury for the play “Warsaw Alarm”, a human tragedy dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, based on the play by V. Korostylev and for the play “About Love”, a lyrical comedy based on the works of O. Sokolova, S. Zlotnikov, V. Rasputin, L. Petrushevskaya.
• In 2017, prize for best director’s work, for the play “Into the Skies”, a flight in the style of Harms, based on the works of D. Harms.
• In 2017, the “Valeriu Cupcea” prize for theatrical activity and for the promotion of small-scale theatrical art.
