Annotation
"Equus" is a celebrated and controversial play by English playwright Peter Shaffer about the self-awareness and development of a teenager deprived of religion who invents a god in the form of a horse (equus is the Latin word for "horse"). Written in 1973, the play was recognized as the best play of the 1970s. The plot is based on a true story that took place in a small town near London, which inspired Peter Shaffer to create the work.
The sharp dialogue, the precise psychological plot, and the detective-like underpinnings of the events—all of this made the play an absolute youth hit. The issue of self-determination—sexual, religious, and professional—raised in it remains relevant today.
A gripping detective story combines with profound psychological insight; like other plays by Shaffer, "Equus" explores the relationships between people seemingly opposed in character but connected by something in common. The play reflects the eternal conflict between the individual and society, freedom and limitations, desires and laws.
