Characters and performers:
At first glance, McDonagh's play lacks sharp conflicts and complex plot twists. The action takes place in the Irish backwater town of Leenane, where ordinary people live, forgotten by God. However, boredom, poverty, the musty everyday life, and the meaninglessness of existence so corrode the souls of the town's inhabitants that statues of saints and a new stove become more valuable than human life, and a son thinks nothing of shooting his own father with a shotgun simply because he dared to mock his hair! "The Lonesome West" contains wise humor, a sly grin, sober realism, and a wealth of agonizing reflections on everyday life, with its psyche-destroying unbridledness and permissiveness.
